Castello di Milazzo

You will enjoy the Cathedral of Milazzo, a modern building that replaces the ancient Cathedral. Inside the Church there are important textile finds, sculptures and goldsmiths. The path leads to the Church of San Giacomo (1435), and the Church of Carmine, built in 1574, completely destroyed during the siege of Spain in 1717 and rebuilt in its current form around 1726. Following is the guided visit to the Castle of Milazzo, a fortified citadel that stands on a promontory Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Arab settlements. The first documents on the castle date back to the Norman period (11th-12th century) when the characteristic Mastio was built. Inside the citadel it is possible to visit the Old Cathedral, built in the early seventeenth century to replace the Mother Church of Santa Maria, demolished to make room for the 16th century fortifications. The cathedral, today deconsecrated, has been declared a national monument. The actual castle has an irregular trapezoidal plan structure and there are eight quadrangular towers. The Norman tower of the west side is the difficultest and oldest tower of the Castle. The fireplace hall of the Swabian period, in which the Sicilian Parliament met in 1295, is also very characteristic. The entire court is surrounded by the Aragonese walls, inside which were built storages, cisterns and rooms used as prisons.

On request, it is possible to visit the Antiquarium, hosted in one of the most prestigious historical and cultural structures of the city: the "Quartiere degli Spagnoli", built in the 16th century to defend the "fortified citadel".
