The excursion departure point is San Basilio, a little district of Galati Mamertino, in the middle of two important peaks called “Pizzo Risigna” (1154 m) and “Pizzo d’Ucina” (1282m). From here starts a rural street, surrounded by the green hills, cultivated lands, wild areas, creeks and waterways. The trail consists of a dirt road along the river St. Basil, which gave rise to the little waterfalls of Catafurco, born from the erosive actions of water in the rocks. You will walk through this path until the Village “Molisa”. This little hamlet is an ancient rural area that preserves its ethno-anthropological value. It is characterised by some old herders refuges (locally called “pagghiara”), made by stones and covered by bundles of broom (spartium junceum). Next to the village there is a drinking-trough with fresh water. You will pass along the lowest part of the gorge where the erosive action of water is deeply evident.
Going up the pebbly-river-bank you will finally reach the Catafurco waterfall, a natural waterfall of about 30 m, along the river St. Basil. Here waters collect in a natural cave into the rock, called “Marmitta dei Giganti” (marmite of giant).
