IMG 9349 FILEminimizer FILEminimizerThe Malabotta Forrest is one of the last pristine woods in Sicily. It has an exceptional ecological value, not only for its entirety but especially because of its environmental diversity. In 1997 it has been declared Oriented Nature Reserve.

The Malabotta Wood is located at about 700 m a. s. l. with a maximum height of 1341 m. The forest covers an area of 32,21 km2 and it is situated near the Peloritani Mountains and Nebrodi Mountains, between the municipalities of Montalbano Elicona, Francavilla di Sicilia, Malvagna, Roccella Valdemone and Tripi. In this Nature Reserve you can enjoy different habitats: woods, clearings, humid ed rocky environments etc. Inside the wood there are several naturalistic trails, ranging from 5 to 16 kilometers. One of the most famous path is the "Sentiero dei Patriarchi" (Path of the Patriarchs), characterized by centennial Tree of Downy Oaks.
The "Trota" path is also a very striking track: it is characterized by the Licopedi stream, where in some periods of the year you can see the trouts. Along the way you will even admire some rare tree-example with a trunk up to 2 m diameter and many Turkey Oaks (large deciduous trees growing to 25–40 m. tall). You will also enjoy the view of many other types of trees: the European Wild Pear, the Elder, the Ash, some species of Maples, the Cytisu and different forms of Willows, Hazels English Walnuts and Chestnuts. The undergrowth is luxuriant: It is full of some unusual plants such as Peonies, Hawthorns, Spanish brooms and Dog Roses. In the second part of the trail you will walk into the vast and evocative beechwood and following the path you will discover some clearings, in which enjoy the breathtaking panorama.
