Castroreale (ME): Tre Pizzi and Piano Margi

The round trail starts from a little town of Castroreale, the village of Santa Croce. You will reach the top of Tre Pizzi, along a path immersed in the typical Mediterranean vegetation, characterized by oak, chestnut and pine woods. From here, it is possible to enjoy a beautiful landscape of the Tyrrhenian coast and the Aeolian Islands. The trail continues with a guided tour of the”Grotta dell’Eremita”, a wonderful cave with special calcareous concretions. Finally you will return to the departure point.

It is possible to continue the journey up to Piano Margi, on request.

Piano Margi is a very extensive refreshment area of ​​about 3 hectares, with several benches, tables and barbecues around an artificial lake.

Castroreale (ME): Zafarana Forest

pianomargitrepizzizafaranaThe trail starts from the Floresta river, one of the tributaries of the Patrì torrent. The path continues towards an ancient rural settlement belonging to the community of "Buscaini della Foresta di Zafarana". 

This area was once inhabited by people who practiced agricultural and pastoral activities. The path is characterized by the rare Old World Sycamores, but it is also possible to admire many different plant species.
Paying attention, you can listen to the warble of the Eurasian wren, the Eurasian blackcap, the great spotted woodpecker and the Jay.
With a little luck, you can see the Fox, the Tortoise and other animals that inhabit this enchanted place.

A short detour will give you the opportunity to enjoy a centuries-old downy oak, which represents one of the Peloritani Mountains' patriarchs. From here you will come back to the starting point.
